Valero Texas Open hosts annual Night to Honor Our Heroes

San Antonio, TX

SAN ANTONIO – (March 31, 2023) – To honor military servicemembers and veterans within Military City USA, the Valero Texas Open hosted its annual Night to Honor Our Heroes at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.

The night, sponsored by Boeing, included a reception and dinner where guests could admire a rare collection of military artifacts while socializing with military and business leaders in the community.

Additionally, the program included music by “Fort Sam’s Own” 323rd Army Band, the presentation of colors by the Joint Base San Antonio Joint Color Guard, a rifle drill demonstration by Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets of John Jay High School, keynote speakers, and a panel discussion with college football coaches Brent Venables of the University of Oklahoma, Jeff Traylor of the University of Texas-San Antonio and ESPN/ABC in-game analyst Dan Mullen moderated by Dan Hicks of NBC Sports.

“I truly enjoy attending this event,” said Post Commander Burrell Parmer of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828. “This really demonstrates the love and respect the people and sponsors of the Valero Texas Open have for our military and veteran community here in Military City USA.”

According to information from the Valero Texas Open website, the military is a key part of San Antonio and the Valero Texas Open. And from a historical perspective, the Valero Texas Open is the only PGA TOUR event to have been played on a military golf course (Fort Sam Houston Golf Course in 1950, 1951, 1956 and 1960).

Throughout the tournament, active duty, Guard, reserve, retired military or veterans and one guest were invited to enjoy special benefits at the Valero Texas Open. This included free admission for all rounds of competition, to include free parking.

Additionally, servicemembers and their guests had access to the Heroes Pavilion, which allowed them to relax and take in all the action while enjoying complimentary refreshments and covered seating.

Fred Brock Post 828’s mission is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
