Asst. Sergeant-at-Arms James DeBisschop with Senior Vice Commander John DeBisschop.

Father and son serving together as department officers

Naugatuck, CT

The Department of Connecticut's 104th annual convention was a family affair. John F. DeBisschop III was elected as department senior vice commander. John is a U.S. Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf era. It is Connecticut's tradition that the senior vice commander gets to recommend to the department dommander the Legionnaire they would like to have appointed to serve as their sergeant-at-arms. John could think of no one better to serve alongside him than his son, James DeBisschop. James is a member of the Connecticut Army National Guard who was activated and saw service in Poland as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. At 22, James is not only among the younger generation of active Legionnaires, but the department is willing to guess that he is likely the youngest Legionnaire to presently be serving as a department officer. Prior to becoming eligible for membership in The American Legion, James was an active member of Sons of The American Legion Squadron 17 in Naugatuck, where he is a past commander. The Department of Connecticut knows that this father-and-son team will serve The American Legion well during the coming year.
