To increase their visibility in the community and engage with veterans and their families, members of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 participated in the 37th Annual Taste of New Orleans held at the Sunken Garden Theater on April 20, 2024.

The three-day event, hosed by the San Antonio Zulu Association (SAZA) Commission, Inc., is one of Fiesta San Antonio’s most popular events.

Legionnaires joined by Auxiliary members and Sons of the American Legion manned an information booth to educate veterans and the others about the organization and encourage eligible persons to join The American Legion Family.

According to Past Commander John Rogers, the post was more than happy to be at the event.

“The Taste of New Orleans provided us a great opportunity to be seen and talk to people,” said Rogers, who also serves on the post’s Board of Trustees. “The event garnered several new members to include a new member for our Sons of the American Legion Squadron.”

Many veterans, including active-duty servicemembers, visited the booth in addition to those who came by to thank the Legionnaires for their service.

One veteran, along with his wife, was observing the booth and introduced himself as Frederic Brock. After a short talk, he joined the post.

Special thanks to Past Commander Rogers for chairing the event to include Legionnaire Jerome Harris with the SAZA Commission for presenting the opportunity.

“The time spent at the Taste of New Orleans was well worth it,” said Executive Committee Placement 2 Karl Lanier. “Many we spoke with did not know how important The American Legion was nor of its numerous programs.”

Fiesta San Antonio started in 1891 as a one-parade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. It has grown into a celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures. This year’s Fiesta San Antonio began April 18 and will conclude April 28.
