Oldest Native American Legion post carries out 100-year-old tradition on Memorial Day

Chauncey Eagle Horn-Philip Iyotte Post 125 - Rosebud, SD

Chauncey Eagle Horn-Philip Iyotte Post 125 of Rosebud, S.D. (est. 20 December 1919), visited 21 cemeteries across the Rosebud Reservation, home of the Rosebud Sioux (Lakota) Nation. At each cemetery a prayer was said, volleys fired and taps sounded by a live bugler. This is a tradition that has endured for the last 100 years, since the end of WWI. There used to be six cemeteries visited by our grandfathers, using a team and wagon to travel. We visit 21. The American Legion is proud to carry on this great tradition honoring our war dead.
