The American flag is a piece of cloth with a beautiful and bright design. But that is not why I stand for it. I stand for what the flag stands for. Our flag stands for the principles and values on which our country was founded. Abraham Lincoln said that this nation was founded on the proposition that all men are created equal. Thomas Jefferson wrote that all have certain natural or unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He left out property. Our government is expected to protect these rights and more. This is why it was created by the people and is answerable to the people. In our founding era, government was expected to provide for the security of the people and the happiness of the people. We sacrifice some of our individual freedom for the greater freedom of living in a country over which our American flag flies. This is why I stand for the flag, for the great principles and values it represents.
