I attended basic training at Lackland AFB in October 1964. I was a member of the "6 Week Wonders" program, who were universally disliked by every drill sergeant as receiving far too little suffering for us dweebs.
Our NCOIC was brutal. After commending us and berating us daily for 5 weeks he gave us the afternoon off in San Antonio. Buses were provided and he took us to a Boy Scout convention at the arena for our reward! More to come ...
About a week later my buddy and I were walking down the street and there was our NCOIC in his car stuck in a ditch ... we pushed and grunted for 10 minutes, finally freeing his car. He floored it and covered our spotless uniforms in mud as he roared away. Needless to say, he didn't even send a thank-you note!
However, to this day I will always remember him with great respect. I marvel at how he took this bunch of 18-year-olds, sorted out the weak ones and whipped the rest of us into a united and strong team. Bravo!
