Nurses, the unsung heroes

The unsung heroes in my book are the nurses who took care of the soldiers in the Vietnam War. I was one of these soldiers. I was in the 2nd Battalion 60th Infantry from 1967-1968. My battalion was ambushed in Tanthanh in the Mekong Delta in April 1967. I was shot three times and seriously wounded. I'm not boasting about that; I've always felt that the true heroes are my brothers who did not return home. I was sent to the Cameron Bay via the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon and then on to Japan; from there I went to Valley Forge and Fort Dix, N.J., hospitals. To be alive and appreciative of all my blessings has always been my motto. I'm to this day strongly endeared by the care of these wonderful nurses. I only wish that at that time, being just 21, I could have remembered all their names and let them know the wonderful care I received. Definitely the true heroes to me were these caring individuals who changed my dressings everyday, took my pulse, temperature, changed my chest tubes and gave medications. They also helped me write letters to my parents and girlfriend (whom I married going on 49 years ago) I can't say enough about those nurses and only wish them all God's blessings, since they will always have a special place in my heart and prayers.
