Flooring for the future

Seward, AK

Seward American Legion Post 5 is a Centennial Post located in the small coastal town of Seward, Alaska. The original post home is a WWII NCO club that was purchased by the post in 1946 from the U.S. Army after some significant haggling (see the Centennial site if you want more). The current post, located at 402 Jefferson St., has undergone quite a few changes over the years, most notably in the 1970s where, in anticipation of further growth, an addition was added to the old log structure. Lots of elbow grease and eyeballing measurements provided the addition to the post. Needless to say, years of use, at times less-than-accurate measurements, homegrown "expertise" and lots of use at the post home has given us a place in need of some TLC - which at this time we're happy to do for our Seward Post 5 Family. Since 2016 we've re-sided the building, purchased new commercial stoves to feed our membership and the community, and now we're upgrading the meeting/event room.

Old tile floors in our meeting/event room, part of an older upgrade, desperately needed replacement! Fortunately, our good partners - the Seward Senior Center and the Seward Community Foundation (part of the Alaska Community Foundation) - have worked with us and we have been granted a generous grant to help us get our floors upgraded, and now we're much safer for all who use our meeting room. For a small post in a town of about 2,700 people, these floors are well utilized! The flooring has replaced old tile flooring that is estimated to be 40+ years old that was breaking up and creating, in some places, a walking hazard. Since our recent installation of the flooring we have held several of our evening organizational meetings for the post, Auxiliary, Sons and Riders as well as supporting Community Sunday breakfasts, high school breakfasts, the Tsunami Science Bowl breakfasts for their annual weekend competition, the Pioneers of Alaska Igloo #9 monthly meetings and weekly community bingo games. We are grateful to all who helped and sponsored us to keep Seward Post 5 going as a viable partner in a wonderful coastal town on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula.

Measure twice, cut once!
