William Beatty, vice commander/service officer of Lewis L. Millett American Legion Post 38 in South Korea participated in the 9.1K DMZ Peace Walk on May 20, 2023. The route started at IMJIN Gak and finished just short of Libby Bridge. Beatty was awarded a medal for being one of the top finishers. The DMZ Peace Walk event was to mark the cease-fire of the Korean War. Over the years, several peace initiatives and events have taken place in the DMZ, aiming to foster dialogue, understanding and reconciliation between North and South Korea. The DMZ refers to the 250-kilometer-long (155-mile) buffer zone that separates North Korea and South Korea. It was established as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement signed in 1953 to end the Korean War. The DMZ is heavily fortified and strictly regulated, serving as a demarcation line between the two countries.
