Old Dominion Honor Flight (ODHF)

Mechanicsville, VA

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, Post 175 in Mechanicsville, Virginia hosted an "Honor Flight" for veterans in the central Virginia area.

The day started with breakfast at the Post for all participants, before sending them on their adventure-filled day in Washington, D.C. via the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico. State and county police, and a retinue of American Legion Riders (ALR), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) riders, Combat Vets Association and other motorcycle riders escorted the buses the 70 miles to Quantico.

After a long day in Washington, visiting monuments and observing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the veterans returned to a warm welcome by their community, family and friends at Post 175. Highlighting their return was a Hanover County ladder truck with an American flag hanging over the entrance, and several other apparatus and vehicles with their lights and sirens blazing and blaring, as well as first responders cheering, heralding their return.

Among those participating was Joyce Merling, a Navy veteran of the Korean War. She was in tears as she was welcomed home after a long day in Washington, D.C. visiting the military memorials. This is the long overdue "welcome home" she never had when returning from Korea. The picture shows Warren Rice, commander of Post 175, personally welcoming Joyce home.
