Post 828 places smiles on families during Thanksgiving

San Antonio, TX

Continuing to assist local families on the East Side during the holiday season, Legionnaires of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 donated $1,500 in H-E-B Grocery gift cards to 30 families of students attending Dorie Miller Academy, Booker T. Washington Elementary and S.H. Gates Elementary Schools.

According to Post Chaplain and Youth Chair Patricia Wimberly, the Post’s Children & Youth Program is guided by three main objectives: to strengthen the family unit, work with quality organizations that provide services for children and provide communities with well-rounded programs that meet the needs of young people. “We are more than happy to have been able to provide the $50 gift cards to the families,” said Wimberly, a retired Air Force nurse. “All should be afforded the opportunity to have a great Thanksgiving Day meal, especially our children.”

The post strongly supports traditional family values, assistance for at-risk children and activities that promote their healthy and wholesome development. “Post 828 will continue to be a staple in the community, especially on the East Side,” said Navy veteran and Post 1st Vice Commander Marcellus Hutchinson. “These families need our assistance, and thankfully, we can provide a bit of service to ease their lives this Thanksgiving holiday.”
Post 828’s next program in support of its youth will be Project Shoes which provides selected high school-aged students within the Post’s area of responsibility with new shoes to start off the new year on January 6.
