Bristol, Connecticut American Legion Post 2 Traveling POW/MIA Table

Bristol, CT

Back in January of 2023, it was decided by members of Post 2 that the POW/MIA table would not be used outside the Hall. To ensure that the ceremony would continue to be held outside the Post, a portable POW/MIA ceremony table was put together by the Post Historian. The table had removable legs for easier transportation and a special carrying case to house all the items used with the table. Thanks to members of Post 2, Ed Litherland, Tim Gamache, Joe Caminiti and Neal Supranovich, the table and ceremony was part of many events to honor our Veterans.

In February, it was used for the first time as part of the Iwo Jima/World War II Veterans Reunion held at the Bristol Public Library. There, a local Iwo Jima survivor was presented with a copy of a painting done of him. Copies of the painting were also sent to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Camp Pendleton Museum and the Bristol Memorial Military Museum. A signed copy was given to the Bristol Public Library.

In the month of May, the table was part of the Vietnam Spouses’ Recognition ceremony held at the Bristol Library, an event of the DoD 50th Vietnam War Commemoration. On Memorial Day, it took part in Bristol’s Memorial Day ceremony and opening of the New Bristol Memorial Boulevard Bridge.
In September, it was used when an Iwo Jima survivor, along with the Post Historian, performed the ceremony as part of the World War II Legacy Foundation's “2nd Annual Commemoration of the End of World War II" event for the state of Connecticut. Quilts of Valor were presented to a group of World War II veterans from across the state that day.

In October, the table was part of a DoD 50th Vietnam War Commemoration event. A display case was dedicated, holding items that were left at “The Wall That Heals," a traveling three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, when it was in Bristol. The display case found a home at the Bristol Public Library with the help of Post 2 to honor our Vietnam veterans.

In November, the table found its way onstage at the Rockwell Theater for Veterans Day ceremony.

On December 7, the table was part of the Annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day held at American Legion Post 2.
