American Legion Post 2 in Bristol, Connecticut helps with the town's Wreaths Across America event

Bristol, CT

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, at a total of 4,300 locations across America, a sum of around 2.9 million wreaths were placed on graves of veterans in their honor for the Christmas holiday. As citizens from across Connecticut gathered to place wreaths to honor veterans, a group from Bristol formed at Lewis Street Cemetery to honor a number of veterans in one of the oldest cemeteries in Bristol for the second year in a row.

The Wreaths Across America event was hosted by the Katherine Gaylord Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Family and friends with the help of the American Legion honor guard, American Legion Post 2 members and the Bristol Korean Veterans Association attended the ceremony and hand-placed wreaths on graves of some of the oldest veterans' graves in Bristol, some dating back to the Revolutionary War.

43 wreaths were placed, 41 at the Lewis Street Cemetery and another 2 at another location.

The American Legion Post 2 honor guard was on hand to play taps.

The ceremony started with a ceremony of placing a wreath on the entrance face in honor of the six branches of service along with one for the Merchant Marines. A POW/MIA wreath was placed by Bob Barrnet in memory of his brother, a Korean War POW who died in a POW Camp.

The American Legion Post 2 Portable POW/MIA Table was on hand for a static display.

The event ended with those in attendance placing wreaths on veterans' graves.
