Pearl Harbor 82nd Anniversary Ceremony - Doris Miller Memorial - Waco, TX

The Pearl Harbor 82nd Anniversary Ceremony was held at the Doris Miller Memorial in Waco, Texas on Dec. 7, 2023, at 11:55 a.m. Legion members from Temple, Post 133 and McGregor, Post 273 were in attendance. The bronze reliefs, sculpted by Eddie Dixon, include the Navy Cross and Naval Citation.
Three images depicting the life of Doris Miller are on display at Bledsoe-Miller Park in Waco. The first depicts Miller's family life as the son of sharecroppers Henrietta and Connery Miller along with his sporting life as an A.J. Moore High School star football player and champion boxer in the U.S. Navy. The second image depicts Miller moving the mortally wounded captain of the USS West Virginia to safety during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The final image depicts Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941.
The memorial's reflection pool perimeter shows names from different branches of the United States military who were honored by family members to help support the building of the Doris Miller Memorial. The guest speaker was Bruce Copney, past commander/founder of the Multicultural SD1 Doris (Dorie) Miller American Legion Post 213 in Brooklyn, New York. The Cultural Arts of Waco - Doris Miller Project Team is responsible for this tribute.
