Then, now and beyond

There was a bird with a yellow bill
That perched upon my window sill
I drew it near with a crust of bread
And then I listened to what it said
The world is in chaos I was told
Abandoning values because they’re old
The younger generation is bought and sold
With gifts of promise that sparkle and glow
But nothing of substance when peering below
The bird then puffed and fluffed its feathers
As a sign of disgust because we can’t come together
And then it looked me straight in the eye
With chatters and squawks and one final sigh
The message was clear as it started to fly
Stop the protests and violence and ongoing lies
It’s time for the country to once again soar
Like the days of old that some still deplore
A return to our roots will be an ongoing chore
But rewards will be worth the effort for sure
With that the bird circled one final time
To ensure that I’d gotten the message sublime
Working together we can prevail
It’s now up to humans to flounder or sail
