Our dad, Benny Wilhelm

Statesville, NC

Our dad was Benny Wilhelm and he died on April 15, 2023. Maybe that is why I'm writing on behalf of my sister and my mama - because it's so recent I want to share with someone how wonderful my dad was and the pride he had in his post. My dad gave his all to his post, Hurst Turner Post 65 in Statesville, N.C. He just didn't go there - he was so proud of that post and his fellow brothers. I will be honest: I continuously was on him to stop volunteering there. He was on radiation and still mowing and weed-eating. He had procedures and would go to paint. He was on the honor guard and almost never missed a funeral. He took great pride in being at those funerals. My dad was a Vietnam veteran in 1970 and was exposed and died from Agent Orange. When we first learned of his cancer in 2015 we were very scared. We always remained calm in front of him and my mom. My sister and I would call each other and express our concerns to each other. He did treatments and radiations and it worked many years. It kept the tumor he developed in his liver there. In the end life has another plan: my dad's cancer had stopped working with the treatment. My dad was very sad to be sitting in a chair. See, on a normal day he would be running errands, hanging at the post or spending time with my mom like he did the past 56 years of marriage. That is when the amazing brotherhood of American Legion Post 65 stepped in. They brought many meals and each day a new post member came and saw him. They had a huge event for my dad at the post, Giving Back to Benny. My dad said it was the greatest day in his life. His service was dedicated to the post. But when my dad needed someone that post was there. He wanted people to send contributions instead of flowers to the post. Always keeping that post in mind. The post did flag lines and the American Legion Riders escorted us there to the church. I really knew then that's why he loved that post. He was a proud member of that post. I now feel the urge to help at the post like he did. My dad was a wonderful dad to us and we are so proud to be his daughters. We are proud of how American Legion Post 65 was there for our dad all the way.
