SFC McMakin

Richmond, KY

I started out after advanced training being sent to the Philippines, where I was in fixed station communications, working alongside Air Force and Navy personnel. We were the largest communications station in the Far East at the time. Then the Army was phased out and they sent me to Okinawa, where I worked in the headquarters as communications specialist. After my tours overseas I was sent to a Nike site at Fort Lawson, Wash. Then decided I wanted to go Airborne to get back to Kentucky. Was stationed in 801st Ma Bn, with the 101st Support Command at Fort Campbell as helicopter mechanic. Spent 5 1/2 years active duty, which was enough, being from 1962 to 1968. Was out of the service for a few years, but over time was talked into getting into the Kentucky Guard, where I worked during the week as a helicopter mechanic, but weekend was military intel. Over the years did many different MOS's, which I enjoyed serving.
Both sons went into the service, Guard, and both went to Iraq. Both retired from service also.
