A cry for help and a blessing received

Atlanta, GA

Here is how two American Legion posts located in Atlanta and Dallas, Ga., combined their efforts to help a disabled veteran named Mr. Walker.

Early one June morning Master Sergeant Patricia Baisden received a telephone call from a Purple Heart Veterans Widow (Mrs. Lillian Ogletree) of East Point, Ga., she called and told me that a veteran needs help acquiring a power wheelchair to get around in the nursing home.

Baisden called her son Bobby Ogletree to learn all the details and was told that Mr. Walker a double amputee from below the knee was in need of a power wheelchair because the one that he had was broken and that he couldn't get around. Thus the long painful search for a power wheelchair for Mr. Walker began. Baisden reached out to DAV, VA, and few local churches and nothing, then on yesterday morning Baisden received an email about a power wheelchair up for donations but before Baisden could respond the chair was gone.

So, something inside Baisden told her to send out an email asking those that were a part of the original email group that if another chair becomes available let her know so that a disabled veteran who weighs 400 pounds and was confined to his bed could get help. Carl Ryan, who had originally claimed the chair, replied that he would donate it because Mr. Walker's needs were greater than his.

Thanks to a donation from Jerry Green (Post 111, Dallas, Ga.) and a random act of kindness by Carl Ryan a huge smile and joy from Mr. Walker came around 10:40pm last night when Baisden presented him with the power wheelchair.
