Shooting Range

I was at Ft Jackson, SC in July of 1954. The first day we went to the firing range and they had us shooting in pairs. One person would shoot and the other would put one bullet in the rifle at a time because the shooter was strapped to the rifle. I was shooting all over the target when the firing instructor came up and told me I was jerking the trigger. I told him I didn't think I was, so he put in the next bullet. When I pulled the trigger, I felt the rifle jerk, but it didn't fire. He had put in a dummy round so I could see that I was jerking the trigger. After that I fired several more rounds and got all bulls eyes. Then they had us fire one round plus a clip of 8. When I fired them in under 10 seconds, the instructor in the tower said, with a megaphone, "Number 12, that was me, you are firing too fast. When they marked my target I had 12 bulls eyes, and the instructor said, "Number 12, you can fire as fast as you want to."
