Something to write home about

I came to this great country from Scotland in 1954. I was 18 at the time. I was fortunate enough to land a job right away. By 1957 my position was stagnated and since I had to register for the draft, I decided to enlist in the Air Force. Off I went to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

My fondest memory is: We had been there for two weeks when our training instructor came in and announced we were to have a GI party that night. Wow, I thought. What a great outfit this is, a party already. I could not wait to write to my mother in Scotland to tell her about it. However, reality struck that night when we were handed cans of Bruce wax, which some of us applied to the floor. The rest of the troops polished the floor behind us using the blankets from their beds. This was my introduction to a GI party.
