Basic training

On about the middle of September 1956, halfway through basic training, the Army put out an order for all men from brown socks to black socks. On the day this took place, I had a doctor’s appointment. So I did not get my black socks. When I got back to my company they were done. The supply sergeant said I could get mine on Monday. This was Saturday. So Sunday morning I came out and our company commander was in front of our door; he wouldn’t even hear my side of the story why I still had brown socks instead of black. So I had to put up a fence in the center of the road. He returned around 6 p.m. Upon looking at the fence, he said, “Take it down, I don’t like it."
