Basic training

Yes, I do remember basic training way back in 1945 at the age of 19 (I am now 88), at Kessler Field in Missouri. I was in the Army Air Corps, not the U.S.A.F. at the time. There were two incidents that stand out in my mind.
The first memory was when I was given an MP arm cloth plus a pistol and put on watch at one of the entry gates to the base. Later, while on duty, I was soon confused when a full colonel came to enter, and I, a new GI, had to ask him for his ID. I was hoping I did the right thing.
The second memory I have was when at the same base; I was on KP lunch duty dishing out food to GIs. The mess sergeant in charge at that time kept walking back and forth behind us. At the same time, he kept telling us to “shake” the spoon to reduce the food quantity we were giving out. At the end of dishing, there was much food left over that we then dumped into the trash cans.
