Drill Team in Basic Training

In Spring 1959, while in basic at Ft Dix, the Field First Sergeant, SFC Tucker, established a 40-member close order drill team. The team, of which I was the "Hut Two man", performed 20 minutes of trick drill with one command.

The team members were all raw recruits and Tucker molded them into a very polished drill team.

While the other recruits in the unit, Company Golf, were getting some breathing time, the members of the drill team were on the tarmac practicing the drill moves.

This included drilling while on bivouac. The unit was still carrying the M1 Garand which made for easier "Manual of Arms".

The team performed at graduation to high praise from the Commanding General.

Tucker was the finest soldier I ever met.
