Haircut Time

I joined the U.S. Navy in late September 1967. Being a typical 19 year old young man, living in the late 60's, my hair might have been a little to long for my upcoming training at Great Lakes.

My father, A WWII Navy Veteran, strongly suggested that I get a military style haircut before reporting to Great Lakes. So, I went to our local barber, told him what I was joining the Navy and he gave me a "fine" looking crew cut. Much, much shorter than I normally wore my hair.

Several days later, I reported to Great Lakes and the Navy barber commented on what a "fine looking haircut" I had. He said, "boy, you want to keep those sideburns??" And I replied yes. He said,"there ya go, hold open your hand!"
He proceeded to skin me for coming to Boot Camp with such a fine looking crew cut. The only thing that kept my white hat from covering my eyes were my ears!

When my mom saw my Boot Camp picture.....she cried!
