"Those Boots Were Made for Walking"

ROTC Summer Camp 1963

For my college job, I was the only Student Supply Assistant at the University of Montana, ROTC Group, so when it was my time to go to my ROTC Summer Camp at Fort Lewis, WA, I was well equipped.

Rules were two pairs of boots, so I hid a third pair in my laundry bag so I would always be ready for inspections.

The Cadre SSG, discovered “my stash” and I was henceforth wearing the boots tied around my neck. (Push-ups and pull-ups were no fun with the boots so attached.)

I survived the experience and summer camp, completed the ROTC program, and guess what Army branch I was commissioned in... the Quartermaster Corps.

Off to Korea for two years and detailed to the Army Security Agency, as a newly minted Second Lieutenant. (Then it took me 37 years to figure out how to get out of the Army.)
