Calling barracks to attention

While in basic training at Lackland AFB, TX in March 1966 our T.I. admonished us not to make the mistake that a former recruit had made. While on barracks guard duty, our squadron commander Major John Y. Hughes, appeared at the door and the recruit dutifully called the barracks to attention whereupon Maj. Hughes proceed to our T.I.'s office upstairs. A short while later a junior officer from our squadron appeared at the door and the barracks guard again called the barracks to attention. A moment later he realized that Maj. Hughes was also standing at attention upstairs so he announced in a loud voice, "Major Hughes, parade rest!" I would not have wanted to be in that recruit's shoes.
