No truck driving experience needed

Ft. Dix, N.J., 1974. After a month of training, we received a day off, a Saturday. In the early afternoon, the senior Drill Instructor (DI) came in the barracks and asked if anybody knew how to drive trucks. As a farm boy, I could drive trucks, so I raised my hand, thinking it would be better than polishing boots.
Another soldier and I went with the DI. About a quarter of a mile away, there was a big pile of gravel and two wheelbarrows with shovels. We spent the day moving that pile.
I learned my lesson – never, NEVER volunteer in the Army!
