Fort Lewis

I was in basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash., in June 1967. During the six-day war in Israel, the captain of Company C-5-2 called a meeting. He said all National Guard members would be going over and fighting in the sand. The war was over before we had finished basic training. Our company was about 90 percent National Guard members. I still remember some of the drill sergeants’ names. We took semi-trailers (we called them cattle trucks) or buses to the rifle range. We were on the north of Fort Lewis, and the rifle range was on the main Fort Lewis. An interstate highway went through the middle.
