Four Chaplains remembrance ceremony

Camp Humphreys, South Korea, OT

On Feb. 3, 2023, Paul E. Finn Memorial Post 37 and Lewis L. Millett Post 38 conducted a joint Four Chaplains remembrance ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Four Chaplains Chapel on Camp Humphreys, South Korea. It was 80 years ago that four Army chaplains - Methodist Church minister George L. Fox; Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode; Reformed Church in America minister Rev. Clark V. Poling; and Roman Catholic priest Father John P. Washington - were onboard USAT Dorchester. Dorchester was struck by a German torpedo and sank in the north Atlantic Ocean. The Four Chaplains gave up their own life jackets to others and drowned after helping dozens of soldiers into lifeboats. The Four Chaplains were locked in arms together in prayers as their final act. 674 perished out of the 904 onboard Dorchester.
