Annual Detachment of Maryland Camp Out

Cheltenham , MD

Each year the Detachment of Maryland sponsors a Camp Out, open and free of charge to members and families of the entire American Legion Family. This event is held at the American Legion Southern Maryland Youth Camp in Cheltenham.

The camp sits on approximately 15 acres, which includes areas for camping, hiking trails, amphitheater, playground, shooting area and fields for various activities. The camp also includes five cabins that sleep 34, an enclosed gazebo and large hall with kitchen available for use.

The Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Maryland has made a commitment to supporting this camp. Detachment Past Commander Larry Ford’s, commander’s project raised funds to install HVAC units in those cabins without it, as well as purchase of a John Deere Gator utility vehicle to assist with property maintenance. This year, Detachment Commander Joseph Lohman is raising funds to build a pavilion to help hold larger groups for various events.

The camp out, attended by approximately 70 people, included various activities including Junior Shooting Sports, SAL Youth Meeting, Flag Retirement, moon bounces, gaming truck, kick ball, cornhole and more.

Attendees were honored to have various detachment leadership, Department of Maryland Commander Ruth Higgins and Department of Maryland Auxiliary President Joanne Weiss spend the weekend and assist with making this an ongoing successful event.

The Detachment of Maryland is also thankful for Detachment Historian Jeff Thorne, who captured amazing photographs.
