Four Chaplains Remembrance Service at Camp Humphreys, South Korea

Camp Humphreys, South Korea, OT

The Four Chaplains Remembrance Service was conducted at the Four Chaplains Memorial Chapel, Camp Humphreys, on February 8, 2024. The event was a joint effort by the two American Legion posts in South Korea: Paul E. Finn Memorial Post 37 and Lewis L. Millet Post 38. It was 81 years ago that four Army chaplains - Methodist Church minister George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Reformed Church in America minister Rev. Clark V. Poling and Roman Catholic priest Father John P. Washington - were onboard United States Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester. Dorchester was struck by a German torpedo and sank in the north Atlantic Ocean. The four chaplains gave up their own life jackets to others and drowned after helping dozens of soldiers into lifeboats. The four chaplains were locked in arms together in prayers as their final act. 674 perished out of the 904 onboard Dorchester.
