Baker County Florida Post 83 Celebrates National Vietnam War Veterans Day

Macclenny, FL

On March 23, 2024, Post 83 teamed up with the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1134 to pay tribute to those who served during the Vietnam War. The actual day for the National Vietnam War Veterans Day is March 29. However, this year that is Good Friday. In order not to interfere with religious activities, we decided to hold the celebration a week early. There were about 75 people present, and 11 of them were Vietnam War veterans.

Before the event, we mustered the Vietnam veterans in a classroom and at the appointed time, they were paraded into the dining room as their names were called. Everyone in attendance cheered them on with "Welcome Home" signs and small American flags. The Baker County HS JROTC presented the colors. After playing the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a POW/MIA "Table Set for One" ceremony.

Next, we introduced our distinguished guests which included the Honorable Lorelie P. Brannan, Florida 8th Judicial Circuit Court Judge, and her husband, Florida District 10 Representative Chuck Brannan. CPL Ted Gornto, USMC read an article describing the Vietnam War Memorial "Wall." It was obvious that many in attendance were emotionally impacted by the moving narration...the speaker and this author included.

Judge Brannan spoke for a few minutes on her father, who was a Vietnam veteran, and then pinned the commemorative lapel pins on each of the Vietnam veterans.

Finally, everyone was treated to a steak dinner courtesy of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1134 and Florida American Legion Post 83. Everyone had a wonderful time and can't wait for what we will do next year! In the days after the event, several other pins were given to those that could not attend the ceremony.
