Attached is a picture of Philip K. Smith, U.S. Navy veteran (Vietnam), saluting the American flag raised on his newly installed telescoping flagpole. Phil is the chaplain for American Legion Post 253, North Webster, Ind., and has been for many years. He is a proud veteran and life member of Post 253.

Before this picture was taken, he had a slight stroke that left him with some minor balance issues, so he uses a walker, but left it aside when his wife took this picture. Phil has since had several more minor strokes but continues to persist in enjoying life and doing what he can to help his family and friends.

Phil is a dear friend of mine and was one of my husband's best friends.
