December Story

Robert Haldi is a past Commander and Chaplain of Tennessee Tellico Lake Post 256. Thinking about suicide and life – reaching out, asking for help, being there for others, he wrote a book about some people in crisis which encompasses many American Legion and basic American ideals – Do the Right Thing, Be A Friend, and Be the One.

"December Story" is the result of how God watches and responds to his people. The story involves a number of people in crisis. When God causes a wealthy widower to lose a large sum of cash in the Chicago snow, he sets in motion events which eventually encompass everyone: a poor immigrant with a wife and two young children facing eviction during December in Chicago, a recovering alcoholic newspaper reporter, and a single mother of a child with Down syndrome.

All these disparate lives become entwined. Doing the Right Thing, Being the One and Being a Friend come into play to provide possible second chances for each. Who achieves a second chance? Ready or not, things are concluded with an unexpected ending for each.

“I want you to know how much I enjoyed reading your “December Story” (that’s actually an understatement – I had a good cry at the end – such a beautiful ending!) You wove together the lives of the several characters so masterfully. I’ve copied Steve [Post Commander] because I want him to know how skillfully you used the American Legion concept “Be the One”!”
- Wendy R, incoming President of the Post 256 Auxiliary
