In the fall of 2022, in support of the Fred Brock American Legion Post 828’s 75th Diamond Anniversary Celebration, the post’s Board of Trustees recommended upgrading the post’s static marquee sign with a more modern digital replacement with the projected cost of $20,000.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the post had to close its doors for nearly a year, which severely depleted the post’s general operating funds. The post did not qualify for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) nor any other COVID grant relief programs offered to for-profit and non-profit organizations in the city. To survive, the post relied solely on membership donations to pay the mortgage, utilities and other associate expenses.

Learning of the San Antonio Growth on the Eastside’s (SAGE) Store Front Grant Program, Post Commander Burrell Parmer submitted the post’s application, which was approved by the SAGE Board of Directors on April 7, 2023, for $10,000.

“Upgrading the post’s marquee will provide Legionnaires, Auxiliary members and Sons of the American Legion, to include the community, with information regarding post activities and veteran services,” said Parmer. “Additionally, it will provide the community and local businesses with the opportunity to have electronic advertisements and for the post to receive supplemental income.”

The Store Front Grant is a program aimed at revitalizing and empowering local businesses in the eastern neighborhoods of San Antonio.

According to SAGE, by offering grants to support exterior renovations, signage upgrades and facade enhancements, the program not only enhances the overall aesthetics of the area but also encourages a sense of pride and investment among local business owners.

Parmer said the digital marquee is the only one on Martin Luther King Drive between I-410 and WW White Road.

“The new marquee has been in operation since Martin Luther King Jr. weekend and has significantly increased the visibility of our post. The year-long project was successful due to the dedication and teamwork of the post’s Board of Trustees,” said Parmer.

The mission of Fred Brock Post 828 is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
