Christmas for veterans

Murrells Inlet, SC

Post 178, Murrells Inlet, S.C., held a benefit cornhole tournament for "Christmas for Veterans." David Shaffer, a Iraq war veteran with the 101st Airborne Division, approached Commander Sullivan about running a charity event to help raise money for his project. Shaffer, who is a member of the post and also the regional director of ACL (American Cornhole League). decided on Oct. 20, 2018. David and his wife, April, who is an Auxiliary member, went to all the local businesses. Gift cards from restaurants, car washes, golf cart stores, T-shirts, dinner show tickets, comedy club tickets and many other items were donated to the charity. Several baskets were then raffled off at the event. The tournament was held at the post on a sunny, windy day. Legionnaires, the Riders, the S.A.L. and the Auxiliary participated in the event. Players also came from Charleston, Conway, Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, N.C. A 50/50 drawing was held, as well as an airmail money shot. The event raised $400. Everyone who participated and watched had a wonderful and fun time.
