Helping our American Legion Family: Post 911 donates Field of Honor plots

“The American Legion was established with a simple mission of four duties that form the four pillars upon which all of our programs rest. It’s who and what we are – The American Legion."
The first of the four pillars is Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation. Under that pillar comes “Final Military Honors.”
Ryan Winslow Post 911 has recently accomplished the goal of that pillar with the transfer of two cemetery plots at Currie Jefferson to the widow of a former Air Force reservist.
The plot of the story begins with Ryan Winslow’s parents. George and MaryNell got four plots in the cemetery’s Field of Honor and used one to bury Ryan.
The Alabama National Cemetery was opened for burials in 2009. Ryan was transferred there in 2018.
Then the Winslows moved from the Hoover area to be close to their grandchildren. They donated the four plots to Post 911 to do with as the post wished.
They felt this was the type of use best for the plots when they donated them.
“That’s our thinking,” George Winslow said. “We’re glad that the plots can be used.”
As an aside, the Winslows began Wreaths Across America at Currie Jefferson and gave the responsibility to the post when they moved.
“This is exactly the kind of situation we were hoping to do with these plots; something that helps us, but also helps a veteran and/or his family who really needs a break,” said Ginger Branson, Post 911 adjutant.
In addition, because the plots were being donated, Currie Jefferson waived the $140 transfer fee.
The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to American Legion Post 911.
Members of the post also showed their respects by attending the graveside service. The family requested that Post 911 assist with the folding of the U.S. flag on the casket. Barry Nance and Cliff White folded the flag, then Peyton Ligon presented it to the widow.
“Both the widow and the daughter are most gracious, and have also expressed an interest in joining our Auxiliary,” said Branson.
