I took basic training at Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, back in 1953 and remember a situation which happened during our gas mask training. We entered a small building where gas was present wearing our gas masks. Our platoon sergeant remained in the building as we came through in small groups and had us remove our gas masks inside. He got some laughs as we shed a tear or two before getting back into fresh air. Our revenge came when he took of his gas mask and then discovered that gas had penetrated his clothing while in that building and had him tearing up for some time before his clothing cleared.
