Legion honoree (retired) Capt. John Crawford dies at 103

Kensington, MD

John "Jack" Crawford Jr., a retired Navy captain, survivor of the Battle of Midway and winner of an American Legion award at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1942, died Feb. 28 at his home in Kensington, Md., at 103. Crawford, who became a top aide to Adm. Hyman Rickover and served on the Atomic Energy Commission, joined American Legion Post 20 at the National Press Club in 2017 after recounting his role in the Battle of Midway and the amazing recovery of binoculars awarded to him by the Legion at his Annapolis graduation. Asked why he had not joined the Legion earlier, Crawford said "nobody ever asked."

Crawford's amazing story was recounted in an Oct. 31, 2017, Legiontown posting.
