Honoring our Heroes - Hooked on Heroes

On Saturday, April 6, 2024, more than 150 veterans (the oldest being 100 years old) descended on the tiny coastal community of Steinhatchee, Fla., for a day of fishing. The event was hosted by the Steinhatchee River Club Marina at Deadman Bay. The event was sponsored by Hooked on Heroes Live Oak Florida (now in its 11th year), which is an all-volunteer organization that takes veterans fishing twice a year.

Veterans are provided with coffee and donuts upon arrival. They are given lunch and snacks for the day. Veterans sit and visit while they wait to be paired with their captain. They're escorted to pick up their fishing gear for the day trip. The captains already have the boats iced up, gassed up, live shrimp on board and drinks in the cooler. Upon return to the dock, all are treated to a chicken and rice dinner with all the fixings donated and prepared by the volunteers from the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office while volunteers clean and bag the fish caught by the veterans. The veterans simply sign up and show up. The most recent event was no different thanks to the dedication of the many volunteers.

Hooked on Heroes had 89 boat captains graciously volunteer their time as well as their boats. There were additional captains who volunteered their time to drive rental boats donated by local marinas. Hooked on Heroes prides itself on accommodating the needs of ALL veterans, allowing service animals and ensuring those with mobility issues, including wheelchairs, are placed on boats to accommodate the veterans' needs. Hooked on Heroes is all too familiar with the sacrifices made by our veterans that kept and keep this country free! No one is turned away.

The hardworking team fund raises all year to prepare for the next year. All proceeds raised go directly to the fishing events, 100% of every dollar donated is used for the sole purpose of taking veterans' fishing. Hooked on Heroes Live Oak has no administrative or staff fees. There are approximately 50 volunteers who dedicate their time and energy so that veterans feel appreciated. The mission of Hooked on Heroes is to provide a stress-free day of fishing to remind those who gave so much that they are not forgotten and are appreciated.

The next event is October 5, 2024. Individuals interested in learning more about Hooked on Heroes Live Oak can learn more at www.hookedonheroes.com.
