Larry Jeffers Post 195 in Lugoff, S.C., hosts a weekly Veterans' Coffee Club every Monday morning from 8-10 a.m. Launched July 7, 2025, the post has seen as many as 14 local veterans show up for the morning interlude.
The brainchild of Post 195's current commander, he felt that the potential to welcome new veterans to the post was an untapped resource. So far, it has proven successful. Coffee, tea, juice and various pastries are offered for free, though donations are accepted.
The area around Lugoff and Elgin, the area most served by Post 195, have their share of the more than 5,000 veterans in the county that make up 8% of the county's population. By his own count, Post 195's commander estimates that less than 800 of those 5,000 are actually involved in the myriad veterans' organizations in the county. So he believed a weekly outreach would bring in veterans and potential new members to the post. And it has.
In the six months of the coffees, no fewer than five new members and one past member have joined the post.
