A Gold Star Families Memorial was dedicated at American Legion Park in Hollidaysburg, Pa., on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2025. The ceremony was the culmination of an Eagle Scout project started over two years earlier, sponsored by American Legion Post 516 in Hollidaysburg. The ceremony was a moving tribute that included the Pledge of Allegiance, an invocation and blessing of the memorial, the Eagle Scout project presentation and the memorial dedication, followed by taps. The Eagle Scout candidate responsible for the memorial is Michael Waibel from Boy Scout Troop 3032 in Hollidaysburg. Michael raised over $15,000 in cash donations, materials and work in-kind from local contractors to fund and complete his project. He is 17 and a senior at Hollidaysburg Area High School. He is the son of Nancy Waibel and resides in Duncansville. In his speech during the ceremony, Michael described the project and its purpose: “Gold Star Families, they give up so much by sending their family members into the military. That’s such a huge sacrifice, and I decided to honor them and honor their sacrifice and all they have given to our country.” This service project demonstrated Life Scout Waibel’s leadership and ability to plan and manage the project from start to finish. Waibel encourages the community to visit the Gold Star Families Memorial, which sits near the Veterans Memorial at the traffic circle at American Legion Park.
