American Legion mural project
Early in 2024 during my wandering around our small town of Winnsboro, Texas, I began to notice various murals being painted on different buildings. One such mural attracted my attention; I thought it was very well done and very creative. I did some research and found it had been done by a Jaci Mouser. I located Mouser via Facebook, complimented her on her work and asked her if she might be interested in doing something on our American Legion post. We had one wall facing west that was large and blank.
After a bit of back and forth, she agreed to consider it and wanted to see the wall and consider possibilities. She later contacted me and said she would be interested if approved by the post.
At one of our monthly meeting, I brought up the possibility of having a mural done on the wall and met with enthusiastic reception. When I again contacted Mouser she decided this would be a community service project and would only charge a minimum fee, with the post supplying the paint and materials. She later sent me several possible designs for the post’s consideration. Out of several possibilities we decided on one design to adorn our post.
As it frequently does, life interfered with our plans. We encountered delays due to weather, job changes, injuries and more bad weather. Finally in April 2025, the stars aligned and work commenced on the mural. The work was completed in May 2025 and was formally dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 2025.
The artists involved in the project were Jaci Mouser, artist/designer; Amanda Leigh Duncan, assistant artist; Kevin Thompson (provided the lift); and the Brandon Davidson Family (landscape rock).
I would also like to thank Larry Fleishman, now past commander, John Whitsell, post commander, and all the members of Carl E. Azbell American Legion Post 340. Now everyone entering Winnsboro on Highway 11 can be inspired by our building.
