On Thursday, Oct. 1, John J. Morris Post 62 honored Navy Veteran Robert John Dickey Jr. as the Veteran of the Month. The event started with the lowering of the flag for the September honoree, Cpl. Ira H. Hayes. The flag was then presented to his family in attendance.
Robert John Dickey Jr. was born on Oct. 5, 1924, in Farmingdale, N.Y. He was employed by Independent Silk Dye as a truck driver at the early age of 17. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 20, 1943, at 18. During World War II, he served in submarine-related assignments and attained the rating of Quartermaster Second Class (QM2c), a specialty involving navigation, chart work, course plotting and maintenance of navigational records. He was discharged on March 13, 1946, with a short naval career having been fast-paced and marked by achievement.
The available family records indicated that he probably married Margaret Gilmore and had at least one son – Robert Dickey III. Robert J Dickey Jr. was called away to Post Everlasting on Sept. 15, 1982. His son passed away earlier this year and has joined his father in Post Everlasting.
John J. Morris Post 62 is honored to recognize Robert John Dickey Jr as our Veteran of the Month and proudly fly his flag for all members and visitors to recognize his service, his sacrifice and his legacy.
