'Let the adventures begin'

DeLand, FL

In June 1960, I graduated from high school. The military draft was in force. I wanted to join one of the armed services because that’s what a man does. I had read many classic novels about boys leaving home for a life of adventure at sea, i.e. “Treasure Island," “Kidnapped," “Moby Dick," etc. I went to the recruiting center. While in the hallway, some recruiters told me “We build men” and other slogans. The Navy recruiter informed me they did not “build” men, but want men of iron to sail ships of steel.
That it would be an adventure and a way to serve my country. I enlisted on the spot. Let the adventures begin.

My family has served in the Navy, Marines, Army and Air Force. My four-year hitch included serving on an aircraft carrier and later a destroyer, crossing the Pacific three times. I’m glad I could offer my services to our country to help America remain great, safe and free. Anchors Aweigh!
