Honolulu , HI

HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI – June 12, 2025 — On June 12, Fran Riddell and CR Drumheller of American Legion Post 17 proudly represented their post during a vibrant Community Day held at Fort DeRussy by U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii and U.S. Army Pacific. The event, part of Army Heritage Week and the celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, honored the legacy of military service and highlighted the Army’s focus on warfighter readiness and lethality.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the lush grounds of Fort DeRussy welcomed a diverse crowd of Waikiki tourists, Oahu residents, active-duty personnel, veterans and international visitors, all eager to engage with the Army’s mission and heritage.

The Post 17 table was a hive of activity throughout the day. Riddell and Drumheller met with numerous active-duty soldiers and retirees from across the United States and Australia. They ensured all local law enforcement officers stayed hydrated in the Hawaiian heat with complimentary bottles of water and handed out miniature American flags to excited children, reinforcing a shared sense of patriotism and community.

“We were thrilled to be part of such an engaging event,” said Drumheller. “It was wonderful meeting families from all over - including one from the Czech Republic who were so excited to say ‘Aloha!’ - and seeing how much people were interested in the mission of The American Legion.”

Several fellow Legionnaires stopped by the Post 17 table to share stories, swap memories and even express interest in transferring into the local post. Tourists were curious and enthusiastic, asking about the Legion’s work supporting veterans and active-duty servicemembers.

“It was heartwarming to see the connections made today,” added Riddell. “This event wasn’t just about the Army - it was about community, service and the spirit of ohana.”

The celebration included a wide array of interactive displays and live demonstrations. From trying on bomb suits and operating Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robots to climbing aboard military vehicles and exploring helicopters, visitors of all ages gained hands-on experience with the tools and techniques that define modern warfare.

Special operations teams highlighted their elite training capabilities, and military working dog demonstrations drew large crowds. A military firetruck and hands-on weapons displays offered a closer look at the Army’s operational readiness, while recruiters provided information on service opportunities.

Live music from the 25th Infantry Division Band added to the festive atmosphere, creating a backdrop of celebration and camaraderie throughout the day.

“This community day celebrates 250 years of Army service while showcasing our commitment to warfighter readiness and our deep connection to those we serve and protect,” said Col. Rachel Sullivan, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii commander. “We’re honored to open our doors, share our mission and celebrate alongside our neighbors in the spirit of ohana.”

One soldier of the 25th Infantry Division echoed that sentiment: "Amazing to see the community come out and engage with us and learn more of who we are and what we do. The kids had fun and learned how we train. This day builds a bridge between us and the people we serve here in Hawaii."

Army Heritage Week, observed each June, commemorates the founding of the U.S. Army on June 14, 1775. In Hawaii, the weeklong celebration underscores the Army’s enduring legacy of service and its steadfast ties to the island communities. The Fort DeRussy event reflected the Army’s dedication to its core values - resilience, readiness, service and aloha.

As the Army enters its 250th year, events like these reaffirm its commitment not only to national security, but to the people and communities it protects. For Post 17, it was a day well spent standing shoulder to shoulder with soldiers, veterans and citizens alike, celebrating a legacy of service and looking ahead with pride.
