Gen. Omar Bradley

Moberly, MO

Sarah Graff, chair of the General Omar Bradley Memorial, Library, and Museum Inc. (www.omarbradley.org), and Walt Lantzy, LTC, U.S. Army (retired), president of the General Omar Bradley Mid-Missouri Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, collaborated this year on two projects to honor Bradley, a hometown hero of Moberly, Mo.

Omar Nelson Bradley (12 February 1893 – 8 April 1981) was a senior officer of the Army during and after World War II, rising to the rank of General of the Army. He commanded the 1st United States Army during the invasion of Normandy. After the breakout, he took command of the 12th United States Army Group, which ultimately comprised 43 divisions and 1.3 million men, the largest body of American soldiers ever to serve under a single field commander. He was the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and oversaw the U.S. military's policymaking in the Korean War. He was born in Randolph County, Mo.

The first project was to get 100 signatures for the Department of Transportation to name a section of Highway 63 after Bradley. After going through the application process, raising $4,000 for the sign, and the legislative process, the Department of Transportation approved the memorial sign below.

The next project was to rename the Moberly Armory to the General Omar Bradley Armory. This project was well supported and well received by the Missouri National Guard. The ceremony was conducted on June 6, 2025 (the 81st anniversary of D-Day). Maj. Brain Randolph was the master of ceremonies with BG Matthew M Bacon, Assistant Adjutant General and Sarah Graff as guest speakers. The two guest speakers did the honors of uncovering the new name of the armory
