Warrior awards scholarship to former Poppy Princess who became a rose

Post 434 - Oak Creek, WI

American Legion Post 434 in Oak Creek, Wis., awards its first recipient of the John Sagan scholarship to Anneliese Oswald. The scholarship is named after local philanthropist John Sagan, one of 14 kids born to Polish immigrants. His family had an 80-acre farm in Oak Creek. John finished nine years of school before having to help out with his family’s farm because his older brothers were serving in World War II. John was drafted into the Army one month after he turned 20. He went to Fort Jackson for an abbreviated basic training before heading to Fort Lewis, Wash. He was then sent on a troop ship to Japan for gear issue, then to Incheon, South Korea. John was trucked and eventually walked into Pork Chop Hill. In the 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Infantry, Company B they fought against constant mortaring. He then went on to fight in Old Baldy and T-Bone Hill. He turned 21 at T-Bone Hill and was still there when the armistice was signed. After returning home to Oak Creek he and his wife Lois had four children together. John was one of the first police officers when Oak Creek became a city. In their 70s Lois and John purchased the Cozy Inn, a bar and restaurant. John lost Lois 15 years ago but still has the Cozy Inn. On Wednesdays John and his daughter Joyce have food available for veterans and seniors in need. John is a devoted Christian, friend, and member of The American Legion. Post 434 is honored to be able to start the annual John Sagan scholarship.

The 1st annual John Sagan scholarship is being awarded to Anneliese Oswald. Anneliese is a 2025 graduate from Muskego High School. She is the granddaughter of American Legion and Auxiliary members Jim and Barb Oswald. Anneliese was a junior Auxiliary member for 10 years and the Poppy Princess in 2014 and 2015. She graduated with a 4.9 GPA, which includes credits from taking college courses. She will attend Georgetown University this coming year with a pre-medicine track including global health and biology.
