Iwo Jima survivor who witnessed the flag raised 80 years ago honored at City Flag Day

Bristol, CT

Members of the City of Bristol turned out to honor Joe Caminiti, an Iwo Jima survivor who in March returned from Iwoto, Japan, where he revisits the spot he stood on when he witnessed the American flag raised over the crest as he looked up. He placed a wreath with the prime minister of Japan in memory and honor of those who lost their lives fighting. The monument happened to be donated 41 years ago by the John Wayne Foundation; Wayne's son Michael was the head of the foundation at the time.
Facts about the trip were shared by the American Legion Post 2 historian, who had traveled to Iwoto with Caminiti. He and fellow Legion member Tim did the Missing Man Table for the event.
