My most memorable experience from Air Force boot camp occurred one day when the DI gave us a “smoke break” after a very hot (in August) marching exercise. We were instructed on field stripping a cigarette and putting the filter in your pocket for future disposal. This one airman thought he could just flip the finished butt in the grass, and no one would notice. Wrong! DIs see all. SSgt White instructed me to go to a shed and retrieve a shovel. This offense required this poor airman to dig a “grave” for this cigarette butt. The ground around the drill pad was concrete-hard. The poor airman dug for about 20 minutes and finally buried the butt. White was instructing us on history and customs of the Air Force while this fiasco was going on, all the while trying not to show any emotion. It was funny! White proceeded to ream this poor airman for burying this butt without a proper service and inviting his fellow airmen to participate. He had to redig the butt and hold a proper service. Nobody dared laugh, but it was unforgettable. He gave up smoking that day!
